Renting a roll-off dumpster in Tampa Bay is one of the most straightforward ways to handle a renovation, cleanout, or construction project. But a little preparation before the truck arrives goes a long way — it protects your property, keeps the driver from having to redeliver, and makes sure your project runs smoothly from start to finish.

Here are 10 things to do before your dumpster delivery in Hillsborough County.

Space Requirements for Delivery

Before anything else, make sure your drop zone can physically accommodate the delivery truck and the container. Here are the minimum clearances:

10 ft Width Needed

Minimum driveway or lane width for the truck to fit comfortably

60 ft Length Clearance

Straight run needed for the truck to back in and set the container

22 ft Overhead Clearance

Check for low-hanging trees, power lines, or awnings in the path

⚠️ Tight Driveway?

Not sure if your driveway can fit the truck? Call us at (813) 535-0116 before booking and describe the access. We can talk through placement options — street placement, side yard, or a different drop point — to find what works.

10 Tips Before Your Dumpster Arrives

  • 1

    Clear the Drop Zone Completely

Move all vehicles, bikes, equipment, and anything else out of the area where the dumpster will sit — and out of the path the truck will take to get there. The driver needs a clear straight run to back in and set the container. Even a trash can in the wrong spot can be a problem. Clear more space than you think you need.

  • 2

    Protect Your Driveway Surface

Roll-off containers are heavy — the container itself can weigh 4,000+ lbs before you add a single piece of debris. For pavers, decorative concrete, stamped concrete, or asphalt driveways, lay down 4–6 sheets of 3/4" plywood under where the container legs will rest. This distributes the weight and prevents dents, cracks, or scuffs on your surface. We can advise on placement when you call.

  • 3

    Check for Overhead Obstructions

Walk the delivery path and look up. Low-hanging oak branches, power lines, cable lines, basketball hoops, gutters, and roof overhangs can all block the delivery. The roll-off truck arm extends 22 feet in the air when setting the container — anything lower than that in the swing path is a problem. Trim or temporarily remove obstructions before the driver arrives.

  • 4

Know What You Can and Can't Throw In

Review the prohibited items list before you start loading, not after. Throwing in a prohibited item can result in additional disposal fees or the load being rejected at the transfer station. See the full list below. When in doubt, call us first.

  • 5

Sort Your Load Before You Start

Walk through the project area and create three piles: what goes in the dumpster, what gets donated or sold, and what needs special disposal. Doing this before the dumpster arrives saves hours of sorting later and makes sure you're not paying to haul away items you actually want to keep. In Hillsborough County, our junk removal crew can also handle any items you've sorted for haul-off in a separate trip.

  • 6

Load Heavy Items on the Bottom

Put your densest, heaviest materials — concrete blocks, tile, drywall, wood framing — at the bottom of the container. Lighter materials like insulation, carpet, packing materials, and cardboard go on top. This keeps the load stable during transport and makes more efficient use of the container's weight capacity.

  • 7

    Don't Overfill the Container

This is the most common mistake. Debris must be level with or below the top rail of the container — nothing sticking up above the sides. Overfilled containers cannot legally be transported on Florida roads. If you call for pickup and the load is overfilled, we'll need to come back once it's leveled — which delays your project. When in doubt, stop loading and call us to discuss options.

  • 8

Check Permit Requirements for Street Placement

If the dumpster is on your private driveway or yard, you almost certainly don't need a permit in Hillsborough County. However, if the container will be placed in the street, in a right-of-way, or blocking a sidewalk, you may need a permit from the city or county. Brandon, Riverview, Tampa, Apollo Beach, and other municipalities in Hillsborough County each have their own rules. Call your city or county office — or ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.

  • 9

Give Neighbors a Heads-Up if Needed

If the delivery truck needs to temporarily block a shared driveway, narrow street, or alley, a quick text or knock on a neighbor's door goes a long way. Deliveries take about 15–20 minutes, but a car parked across a tight entry point can cause delays. A little courtesy prevents headaches.
