One of the most common surprises homeowners run into with dumpster rentals: loading something that shouldn't be in there, and ending up with extra fees or a rejected haul. The rules aren't arbitrary — they come from disposal regulations, weight restrictions, and landfill requirements in Hillsborough County.
This guide gives you the complete picture of what's accepted, what's not, and what to do with the stuff that can't go in a roll-off.

Heavy Materials: The Weight Trap
Even if a material is technically accepted, some items can cause problems by exceeding the dumpster's weight limit before it looks full. The most common culprits in Tampa Bay:
Roofing Shingles
Asphalt shingles are dense and heavy. A single square of shingles (100 sq. ft.) weighs about 300–400 pounds. An average Tampa Bay home might have 30+ squares, which adds up to 9,000–12,000 pounds — well above what most standard dumpsters can handle before overage fees kick in.
For roofing jobs, we typically recommend a 10 or 15-yard dumpster specifically because keeping the volume smaller helps manage weight. If you have multiple layers of shingles coming off, call us before ordering — we can help you plan for a swap rather than overloading one container.
Ceramic & Porcelain Tile
Tile is one of the heaviest things you'll throw in a dumpster per cubic foot. A bathroom or kitchen's worth of tile can easily hit 2,000–3,000 pounds and barely fill a quarter of the container visually. Always mention tile removal when you call so we can recommend the right size and set accurate expectations on weight.
Why Concrete Is Never Accepted
Concrete is simply too heavy for standard roll-off disposal. A single cubic yard of concrete weighs about 4,000 pounds — more than most entire dumpster loads. Concrete also requires separate disposal facilities. If you need concrete removed, call us and we'll point you to the right solution for your job in Hillsborough County.
Hazardous Waste — What to Do Instead
Hazardous materials can't go in a dumpster, but that doesn't mean you're stuck with them. Hillsborough County has a Household Hazardous Waste program that handles these items at no charge to county residents.
- Hillsborough County HHW Program: (813) 272-5680 — they accept paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, batteries, and more
- Refrigerants (AC units, refrigerators): Contact an HVAC company for proper refrigerant recovery before disposal
- Car batteries: Most auto parts stores (AutoZone, O'Reilly) take these for free
- Electronics: Best Buy and Staples offer electronics recycling
- Propane tanks: Many hardware stores offer exchange programs
Homes built before 1980 in Hillsborough County may contain asbestos in insulation, floor tiles, roof shingles, or drywall compound. If you're doing a renovation on an older home, have a licensed inspector check before disturbing any materials. Asbestos cannot go in any dumpster and requires licensed abatement contractors.
Electronics and E-Waste
TVs, monitors, computers, and other electronics are technically accepted in our dumpsters, though some facilities charge additional fees for e-waste processing. If you have a large volume of electronics, it's often better and more environmentally responsible to separate them out for recycling.
Hillsborough County's recycling drop-offs and Best Buy's in-store recycling program accept most electronics at no charge. Laptops, phones, tablets, and small devices are almost always better off recycled than landfilled.
Mattresses: Accepted But Worth Noting
We do accept mattresses in our dumpsters. However, if you have just a few mattresses and no other junk to remove, it may be more cost-effective to call a junk removal service — we can haul a mattress or two for less than the cost of a full dumpster rental. Some Tampa Bay donation organizations also pick up mattresses in good condition.
